First aid for cellar fungus | Aquavent

Problems with cellar fungus?

Cellar fungus can develop over time in constantly damp cellars with poor ventilation. Cellar fungus grows primarily on natural materials from which it obtains its nutrients to continue growing.

It is important to remove cellar fungus professionally and thoroughly and to address the cause (moisture problem) of the fungus growth. If left untreated, cellar fungus will continue to grow and cause structural problems in your home by eating away at building materials.

How do you recognize cellar fungus?

Cellar fungus can occur in various forms, depending on the phase in which the fungus is located and the surface on which the fungus is propagating. Most cellar fungi primarily nest on wood or wood-derived materials, preferably untreated wood such as wooden planks and laths, OSB, etc.

In the growth phase of the cellar fungus, we mainly see a yellowish, cotton-like growth edge with small roots or covering. The fruiting body, and thus the core of the fungus, is usually ochre-colored to dark brown. As the cellar fungus develops further, many fan-shaped dark to black fungal threads develop that can spread over large surfaces. The fungus uses these threads to search for food or other materials to extract food from, to reproduce or to make new fruiting bodies.

Why treat cellar fungus?

Cellar fungus in your cellar is a serious threat to your building. As long as the cellar fungus can obtain its nutrients from stored materials, the consequences for the building remain limited, but once the cellar fungus has developed sufficiently, it can look for other nutrient sources and eat away at walls and load-bearing structures.

In the case of a ceiling structure with wooden structures, these are weakened from the inside and eaten away by the cellar fungus, which can cause subsidence in the long term. However, if the fungus is treated in time, your load-bearing structures may be preserved without major problems. In masonry cellar walls, the fungus can eat into the walls through the joints or cracks in the walls and weaken the walls, causing structural cracks and settlements.

In addition, the spores of cellar fungus are harmful to health. Over time, a cellar with fungus will be full of spores that fly into the other rooms of the building and can cause health problems for the residents.

Why is a diagnosis necessary?

When treating cellar fungus, it is not only about professionally removing the fungus, but also about solving the cause of the fungus formation, which is usually based on an underlying moisture problem. Our expert therefore searches for the underlying source of the fungus formation and how it can be resolved.
In addition, the expert determines which zone must be treated and with which techniques the fungus can be correctly removed.

There is a difference between the treatment of wood constructions, masonry structure, etc. It is important to completely remove the cellar fungus, kill the spores and tackle the source in order to be able to give complete certainty that the cellar fungus has been definitively controlled. The expert will demarcate the correct treatment zone so that the fungus can be completely eradicated.

How do we work

Our approach combines professional knowledge with careful execution, so that every step contributes to a lasting result.

Our approach to cellar fungus

Most cellar fungi therefore nest in wood and other natural materials that can absorb high levels of moisture. All affected materials or parts that have come into contact with cellar fungus are treated in the same way.

In the first place, Aquavent ensures that the source of the moisture or water seepage is treated so that the fungus does not receive any new nutrients. The infiltration site is then dried extra quickly if possible to slow down the rotting of the affected material. All rotten and eaten materials are removed and a safety zone is demarcated around the parts affected by fungus and cut away or removed. The surrounding surfaces are sanded with a steel brush to remove all fungal spores. Finally, the remaining materials or the entire space are subjected to an anti-fungal treatment with fungicidal products that are injected or sprayed.

Removing cellar fungus is therefore a job for specialists who can correctly assess the situation and not only remove the fungus locally, but also effectively tackle the cause and the entire fungal body with its metastases professionally. Call in a specialist in cellar fungus treatment with experience and choose Aquavent.
