Damp problems in your facade are more common than you think – especially if you have an older home or if there is no adequate protection against precipitation or ground water. Where rising damp mainly affects the underside of walls, damp in the facade often occurs as a result of penetrating damp: rainwater that penetrates the wall from the outside. In both cases, this requires a completely different approach. An incorrect diagnosis not only leads to useless costs, but also to permanent damage to your home. Some people also confuse facade problems with condensation problems, which means that moisture problems persist even after facade treatment.
Tackling damp exterior walls: how do you do it?
The question of what the right approach is to treat a damp exterior wall depends on the cause and therefore the expertise on site. When it comes to penetrating damp, the cause is usually a porous facade, damaged joints or a problem with elements on the facade itself. In that case, it is important to make the facade water-repellent again. This is usually done via facade impregnation, where the exterior wall is treated with a transparent water-repellent product. This makes the wall water-repellent, but the facade continues to breathe thanks to the air-permeable structure.
In more serious cases – for example, in the event of severe cracking, heavily weathered bricks or leaks – additional measures may be necessary, such as re-pointing the facade or installing new facade cladding.
Is the moisture problem noticeable on the underside of the facade? Then there is a good chance that there is rising damp. In that case, a wall injection is recommended, in which a moisture-resistant agent is injected into the wall.
What does it cost to have damp in your exterior wall treated?
The price for damp control on exterior walls depends strongly on the chosen technique, the surface area of the facade and the condition of the brickwork. A facade treatment costs on average between €2000 and €4000 for the west facades, depending on the size of your building and preparatory work. Of course, these prices are therefore very dependent on the size of the total facade project and any preparations (scaffolding, aerial platform, etc.) and therefore a correct quotation can only be drawn up after all factors have been fully mapped.
